Journalism

As a science journalist, I write for a variety of popular magazines and newspapers, covering archaeology, history, world heritage, exhibitions, and travel.

My articles regularly appear in The Art Newspaper, and I've contributed to Apollo Magazine, News from Science, New Scientist, History Today, All About History, Timeless Travels, The Independent, Current World Archaeology, Rawi: Egypt's Heritage Review (for which I was also editor), Showbiz Culture (the magazine of SC Exhibitions), and B.Inspired Magazine.

I cover breaking news, and have written features on diverse topics, from the world’s most mysterious manuscripts and the Near East after the Bronze Age collapse, to heritage destruction in Yemen and heritage crime in post-revolution Egypt.

Author

My newest book is The Story of Tutankhamun: An Intimate Life of the Boy Who Became King.

I am also the author of The Pharaoh, Life at Court and on Campaign (2012), The Egyptian Myths: A Guide to the Ancient Gods and Legends (2014), War and Trade with the Pharaohs: An Archaeological Study of Ancient Egypt's Foreign Relations (2017), and Egyptian Mythology: A Traveller's Guide from Aswan to Alexandria (2021).

Teaching and Academia

I hold a BA in archaeology, and an MA and PhD in Egyptology from the University of Liverpool.

I've taught classes at the American University in Cairo, the Bloomsbury Summer School, the Egypt Exploration Society in London, and as a part-time tutor for Oxford University's Department for Continuing Education, where I am currently the certificate in higher education's assessor for archaeology, anthropology, and ancient history.

As an archaeologist, I've worked with projects in Egypt (at Qantir-Pi-Ramesses in particular), Turkey, and the UK; and my scholarly articles on Egyptian history have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Media and Appearances

I've talked about my books at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the Hay Winter Festival, the Lichfield Festival, and the Wigtown Book Festival.

I've discussed my work on Talk Radio Europe, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Oxford, and on podcasts, including Travels Through Time and World History Encyclopedia.

On TV, I've appeared on BBC 2 (showing Dr. Jo Fletcher around the tomb of Ankhtifi in "Immortal Egypt"), the Discovery Channel (discussing human sacrifice in ancient Egypt), History Channel, and Yesterday (explaining my theory on the death of King Seqenenre Tao and leading the recreation of different scenarios).
